Little did the Rebels know that just behind the stonewalls were concealed the U.S. II Corps.
As the Rebs advanced on the main line the second Corps troops rose from behind the stone
wall and unleashed a devastating volley of musket fire.
The Rebels were taken by surprise from the action and began to withdraw leaving many of
their compatriots behind dead and wounded.
The Rebs were finally pushed back once and for all.
Their General Barksdale lay dead on the field after the fray.
