Buford sent a messenger to General John Reynolds that he desperately needed help.
Reynolds responded to the call and deployed Wadsworth’s Division with Cutler’s Brigade to
the north of the Cashtown road.
The Iron Brigade was deployed to the south of the pike.
Confederate artillery was making a valiant effort at getting in close and the line of Rebels
extended farther to the north than Cutler’s Brigade reached.
Hence, the Confederate forces were outflanking the Yankees.
The Yankee troops began to withdraw taking heavy causalities in the process especially the
soldier’s caught in the slaughter pen of the railroad cut.
