The Reb infantry were chasing the Union forces pell-mell as they retreated. All the Yankees could hear was that fierce Rebel Yell ringing in their ears!
The midsummer sun was brutal to deal with for the men on both sides of the awful and hellish
battle that was ensuing around the sleepy little burg.
West of town, every field was filled with billowing smoke and the continual resonance of massive gunfire.
This hellish war came to Pennsylvania on that fated day of July 1, 1863.
As the Yanks retreated to somewhat safer positions some Yanks filled with the spirit of bravery and hate would stop and battle with the Rebels who truly had the Yanks on the run.
