According to a 2004 study by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime the Afghanistan economy as of 2004 had in its employ about 10 % percent of the population of the country a staggering 2.3 million folks.

In 2003, that number was 1.7 million opium employees. Remember the war started in October of 2001 and is still active in 2008.

The production is not decreasing but increasing. The 2004 report states that Opium production cultivation stands at about 60% of Afghanistan’s gross national product!

Is the war haze of the scenario starting to clear a little?

 Now according to recent input Afghanistan’s opium production has risen to about 90% of worldwide production.
