A Gettysburg Address Transcription
This week the Everett copy of the Gettysburg Address will be going on display
at the new Gettysburg Visitors Center....
What is "The Everett Copy"
The manuscript that will be displayed at the new Gettysburg visitors center was given by Lincoln to Edward Everett, the orator whose
long winded oratory preceded Lincoln's Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863.
The third of the five known copies, and the first to include
the words "under God" in the final sentence that calls for a "new birth
of freedom."
Lincoln obliged Everett's request for a copy So the speech would be in a profile Everett was assembling to mark the dedication of the Soldiers'
National Cemetery.
To be included in that volume; a manuscript of Everett's two-hour speech, speeches from other presenters of the day, various maps of Gettysburg and news accounts
of the day. Everett's idea was to auction the remembrance with the proceeds going to health care for the torn tattered veterans still suffering from the horrendous War of the Brothers.
More to follow on yet another park service conflict with "We the people"
Till next time....... Happy trails!
