Quantrill: A Hero to the South

Illustration of Raid from Harper's Bazaar

Quantrill's most famous success came at dawn August 21, 1863, by leading some three hundred Southern Loyalists on a raid against the city of Lawrence, Kansas.

William Clarke Quantrill

A ballad composed after Quantrill's Lawrence Kansas Raid

Come all you bold robbers and open your ears,
Of Quantrell the Lion heart you quickly shall hear.
With his band of bold raiders in double quick time,
He came to lay Lawrence low, over the line,
Oh, Quantrell's a fighter, a bold hearted boy,
A brave man or woman he'd never annoy.
He'd take from the wealthy and give to the poor
For brave men there's never a bolt to his door.

"War is Hell" and that is a fact as evidenced by this statement from  the Loyal Sons of the  Confederate Veterans Camp Ouantrill's Raiders # 2087 of Mayfield, Ohio

William Clarke Quantrill was a soldier, a leader for a just and honorable cause. He was a hero to the South and a man feared by his enemies. Fellow Ohioan and enemy of the Confederacy, William Tecumseh Sherman said, "War is Hell". He ought to know considering the ruthless, destructive nature of his campaign against unprotected Southern families in his infamous "March to the sea".

The border war between Kansas and Missouri was wild, savage, ruthless and vindictive - by Federal and Confederate forces alike. This happens in war. The many contributions of William Quantrill and his men made in defense of the citizens of Missouri and the Confederate States of America are numerous. Ohio has many native heroes and Captain William Clarke Quantrill is one.

My hat is off to all the brave souls who fought and died for a cause they had a passion about.

"Their way of Life."

I guess my biggest question is;  Have we Americans as a collective learned one thing from that Hellish, Brutal Clash where so many of our ancestors stood toe to toe?

I think not! I see that we are still dealing with much of the same issues and conflicts that brought on that conflict. States Rights...Racism....Hatred.....Patriotism......Money

The War of the Brothers...... could another hellish situation like that ever come to bear
again in the UNITED States of America?

Long Live the Memory of Brave Men and their Beloved Families who gave their all in that struggle between brothers.
